Born to human and elven parents who served as magical archivists for House Highwatch, Alina grew up in a tower of ivory and paper, sheltered from the harsh realities of the mercenary nation. She believed knowledge was power.

She was wrong. In Al Hamaha, leverage is power.

When her parents' patrons, House Valcairn (The Sea Wolves), called in a "service debt" her parents could not pay, they vanished without a trace—along with their earthly possessions.

Alina was left with nothing but her education and a single, sealed family heirloom she was told never to open, but to guard with her life.

Grief drove her to the gambling dens. She became obsessed with probability, convinced that if she could just understand the "math of fate," she could undo the bad hand life dealt her.

She didn't win.

In a desperate gamble, she bet the heirloom... and lost.

Now, Alina wanders the realms as a wizard for hire. She is hunting for the person who won her heirloom, and once she has it, she will find where the Sea Wolves took her parents.

Outwardly

  • Compassionate
  • Polite
  • Timid
  • Scholarly

Inwardly

  • Desperate gambling addict
  • Views every opportunity as a chance to win
  • Derives dark, sadistic pleasure in the torment of her enemies
Alignment Chaotic Good

She despises that the law allowed her parents to be taken, but she was still raised to be kind-hearted. What happened has caused her to take fate into her own hands, and vent out her grief on those who wronged her—violently.

What She Fears Becoming

She fears becoming "The House"—someone who manipulates others for power, just like the people who took her parents.

Sergeant Mara Ironheart

Mentor & Confidant

An ex-mercenary of House Highwatch who lost a leg in a contract dispute and was cast aside without a pension.

She found Alina in an alleyway shortly after her parents were taken by House Valcairn. She couldn't give Alina money, but she taught her how to look people in the eye and lie.

They bonded through their shared anger and hatred of the powerful—sharing that sadistic pleasure in watching the powerful Houses fail.

She is the only person in Al Hamaha who didn't ask Alina for payment for her protection.
